Hongkui wins 2023 JEOL TEM Image Contest Grand Prize

Hongkui Zheng, a current Postdoc Fellow in the He Lab, won the Grand Prize of 2023 JEOL TEM Image Contest (link). The image entitled “Atomic Daisy” shows the atomic structure of LLZO solid electrolytes, which was initially selected as the September Winner in 2023. Congratulations, Hongkui!

Ava Zoba presents in UCI SURF Research Symposium

Ava Zoba, a rising senior in Biomedical Engineering from Pennsylvania State University, joined us through the CCAM Materiasl REU program to conduct summer research in June-August, 2023. Ava has worked on rapid microwave synthesis of LLZO solid electrolytes, mentored by Eric, and presented her work in the UCI SURF Research Symposium. Congratulations, Ava! Also thanks to Eric!

Lucy wins M&M 2023 Poster Award and PMCx60 Travel Award

Lucy Lu received the M&M 2023 Poster Award at Microscopy Society of America’s annual meeting in Minneapolis, MN.  The poster presentation in the “Cross-Cutting Sciences” theme highlighted her recent efforts in applying machine learning approaches to improve the imaging processing of electron microscopy data.  She also received the Travel Award from the Microscopy Society of America Student Council (MSA StC) to present her work at the Pre-Meeting Congress (PMCx60). Congratulations, Lucy!

Dr. He gave an invited talk on the development of relaible microscopy and microanalysis strategies for real-world lithium-ion batteries at M&M 2023 in Minneapolis, MN. He also organized and chaired a Physical Science Symposium on “Advanced Imaging and Spectroscopy for Nanoscale and Sensitive Materials”.

The NSF GRFP provides three years of support over a five-year fellowship period, allowing Eric to pursue significant research achievements in STEM. We are proud to have Eric as part of our team and look forward to his next adventure!

Dr. He receives NSF CAREER Award

Dr. He receives the National Science Foundation CAREER Award. This award funded by NSF Division of Materials Research’s Ceramic program will support a five-year research project to understand the atomic-scale fast ion conduction in solid-state batteries using advanced electron microscopy.

Dr. He gave an invited talk on the development of beyond-lithium batteries using in situ TEM and theoretical modeling at M&M 2022 in Portland. He also co-organized and chaired a Physical Science Symposium on “Quantum Materials Under Electron Beam: From Atomic Structures to Working Devices”. This was the first in-person regathering of the microscopy community after the COVID pandemic.

The He group members, Lucy Lu and Hongkui Zheng, also gave presentations of their work on in situ TEM studies for bismuth antimony telluride nanoplates, and garnet solid electrolytes, respectively
